Our attitude

Shaping responsibility.
Leaving a future.

We believe that successful organisations are measured by more than growth and efficiency: by how they treat people, take on responsibility and what impact they leave behind in the long term.

Where the term comes from

A steward is a guardian: someone who takes care, in trust, of something that has been entrusted to them, with the aim of passing it on in better condition than they received it.

The word goes back to the Old English stīweard , the “keeper of the house”. For centuries it stood for people who were entrusted with house, farm and property.

Today, stewardship describes fiduciary responsibility worldwide: in corporate management, in asset management and in the cross-generational thinking of family businesses.

Johann Spies

An attitude

Stewardship describes consciously taking on responsibility for people, organisations and their long-term development: the attitude that underlies all our work.

Our understanding of leadership

Leadership is the art of accompanying, supporting and challenging people with the greatest attentiveness. A position confers authority. Stewardship demands integrity.

Our view of people

Every person has dignity, potential and responsibility.

Organisations become more successful when people understand their contribution, can grow and are allowed to take on responsibility.

What leadership research shows

People act as stewards when they experience trust, autonomy and identification.

Stewardship theory

Organisations that build on trust, autonomy and identification gain commitment, loyalty and long-term impact.

Servant leadership

Leadership that serves so that others can grow, and precisely in this way secures direction and results.

Family businesses

Cross-generational thinking as stewardship in practice: handing over what has been entrusted stronger than it was received.

Our approach

Stewardship in practice

Stewardship shows in transparent decisions, clear responsibility, genuine listening, constructive challenge, long-term thinking and the willingness to make difficult decisions respectfully as well.

How we measure stewardship

Clarity.

Decisions that provide orientation, openly justified and comprehensible.

Courage.

Making difficult decisions too, respectful towards people and consistent in substance.

Commitment.

Responsibility with economic consequence: results that hold.

What it means for our consulting

  • Strategies that provide orientation.
  • Organisations that enable responsibility.
  • Transformations that take people seriously.
  • Technologies that serve the company.

Our aspiration

Every organisation has the responsibility to leave the world better than it found it.
