Building an IMS to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 at a mid-sized chemical company
To be listed with international system customers, a chemical company modifying plastics needed proof of certified quality and environmental management systems for the first time. Although detailed laboratory procedures existed, process-oriented documentation, a clean key figure structure and a concept that would stand up under waste law were missing.
Complete set-up of an integrated management system (IMS) in accordance with the requirements of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 and reliable support of the company through the entire certification procedure within nine months.
The mandate started with a comprehensive gap analysis to determine the exact current maturity. Building on this, the core processes, from raw material procurement to final release analysis in the laboratory, were documented in a lean digital structure.
In accordance with ISO 19011, the internal audits were simulated and a legally compliant waste management concept according to the criteria of the AWG was drawn up and implemented. Employees and managers were prepared specifically for the upcoming audit.
Result
The company passed the external stage 1 and stage 2 certification audit by an accredited certification body at the first attempt and without a single major nonconformity. The IMS was anchored in the company in such a way that it now serves management as a direct instrument for quality management.
