Waste management concept and incoming goods inspection at a plastics processor
A medium-sized plastics injection moulding company was under double pressure: an official request to update its waste management concept under §§ 10 ff. AWG and a wave of customer complaints due to fluctuating material quality in the incoming polymer batches. The two issues overlapped operationally, because both quality and environmental responsibility lay with the same thinly staffed department.
Double mandate over four months: preparation of a legally sound waste management concept for submission to the authority and, in parallel, the set-up of a reliable incoming goods inspection discipline for primary and secondary polymers.
For the AWK, the material flow was recorded in full, from raw material delivery and production residues to recovery and disposal logistics. The documentation followed the requirements of the ÖWAV guidelines.
In parallel, a lean test routine was established at goods receipt: melt flow rate (MFR/MVR) for each delivery, moisture measurement for hygroscopic polymers, density determination as a control sample. From then on, supplier complaints were documented with hard measured values.
Result
The AWK was accepted by the district administrative authority without further requests. The complaint rate due to material variation fell significantly in the following months, because suppliers could be confronted immediately with measurable deviations. The incoming goods inspection concept was integrated seamlessly into the existing QM system according to ISO 9001.
